ThisbookusesaculturalinteractionapproachtodiscussnumeroustemplesandshrinesofSiniticoriginthathouseDaoist,Buddhist,andfolkgods.SuchdeitiesweretransmittedoutsidetheChinesecontinent,orwereintroducedfromotherregionsandsyncretized.ExamplesincludetempleguardiangodsthatarrivedinJapanfromChinaandlaterbecamedeifiedaspartoftheFiveMountainsystem,andaDaoistdeitythattransformedintoagodinJapanaftersyncretizingwithMyōkenBosatsu.TheprofoundlydifferentimagesofKsitigarbhainChinaandJapanarediscussed,aswellasMt.Jiuhua,thecenterofKsitigarbhainmodernChina.Lastly,theprocessbywhichSiniticgodsweretransmittedtoregionsoutsideoftheChinesecontinent,suchasTaiwan,Singapore,andOkinawa,isexplored.
